Project objectives:
The cost of remediating contaminated sites is likely to run to many billions of Euros.The most important mass-removal process for natural attenuation is biodegradation. 
The project hypothesises that a common pattern of biodegradation activity can be found in most groundwater pollution plumes. Certain zones - which we will
call the CORONA - will have better conditions for biodegradation, and these zones will have more rapid degradation and make a significant contribution to the
overall rate of mass loss for the entire plume. We can identify two basic scenarios, (1) an active, oxidising fringe to a plume, mainly controlled by dispersion,
and (2) an anaerobic core controlled by the interplay between pollutants, environmental conditions and micro-organisms. The project will collect high resolution
data from the coronas at six varied field sites. Parallel laboratory studies will include a model plume for analysis of transverse dispersion and detailed
study of a corona zone. There will be microbiological and microcosm studies in support. Numerical modelling tools will be developed to link scales and transfer
results to non-research sites. We will work with end-users to transfer the research results to user-friendly guidelines and models.
Project Summary:
The goal of CORONA is to increase confidence in assessment and forecasting ofnatural attenuation (NA) of groundwater pollution by strengthening the scientificbasis 
which supports the use of NA as risk assessment tool; providing simple butrobust engineering tools for assessment and quantification of NA as a remedialapproach
for groundwater pollution; and by promoting the use of these tools in theend-user community of problem holders, regulators and advisors. To reach thesegoals
we propose to confirm new hypotheses on plume behaviour arising from ourrecent research. For this we will carry out multi-disciplinary research on 6varied
field sites and in the laboratory and to use numerical modelling to linkscales and transfer results to non-research sites. We will work with end-users totransfer
the research results to user-friendly guidelines and models, including aninteractive training package based on the project results.
