Short description: Soil screening values (SSVs) are concentrations of chemical substances found in soils below which there are not expected to be any adverse effects on wildlife such as birds, mammals, plants and soil invertebrates, or on the microbial functioning of soils. If concentrations of a chemical are found above an SSV, this should prompt further investigation to examine whether there are any ecological risks. SSVs are important tools in Tier 1 of the Environment Agency’s Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) framework for soil contamination, which can be used to support determinations under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and impact assessments under the Habitats Directive.
