Short description: France was one of the first EU countries to conduct systematic inventories of polluted sites (starting in 1978). The main objectives of these inventories are: -to draw up a wide-ranging and exhaustive list of all industrial sites, both abandoned and operational, that present risks of environmental pollution - to keep up a databank of these sites - to provide useful information to organisations and individuals involved in urban planning, land tenure issues and environmental protection. The national BASIAS database was launched at the same time as the Regional Historical Inventories (RHI) of abandoned and operational industrial and service-activity sites.
