Short description: The ARCHON Directory includes contact details for record repositories in the United Kingdom and also for institutions elsewhere in the world which have substantial collections of manuscripts noted under the indexes to the National Register of Archives.
Long description: The ARCHON Directory provides contact details for record offices, libraries and other record collecting institutions throughout the United Kingdom and overseas. These details have been gathered from collections that have been noted in the National Register of Archives (NRA). Staff at The National Archives: Historical Manuscripts Commission regularly add new repositories to the directory as additional material is received. From 1964 to 1999, the Historical Manuscripts Commission issued a hard copy publication, titled "Record Repositories in Great Britain". In 1995 the contact details of repositories were made available online. This was known as Archives Online, which has since been abbreviated to the ARCHON Directory. With the contact details of repositories made available online, ARCHON directory has now superseded these published volumes.
