Short description: The paper assesses the feasibility of desulfurization of coal wastes from mining activity in the Tula region of Russia, where large scale disposal of high-pyrite content waste is a cause of significant local pollution. The parameters considered are the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the wastes, the leachability of the toxic elements, the environmental risks and the major technological criteria for the evaluation of each potential technique.
