Short description: A pilot plant for the removal of polar pollutants from contaminated ground water was designed and constructed based on the development of new polymeric adsorbents with improved properties with respect to fouling. The design was based on the characterisation of the adsorbents by laboratory studies and mathematical modelling, The plant was tested by cleaning up ground water contaminated with explosives and related compounds. The results obtained demonstrate that (a) the removal of polar organic pollutants from groundwater by adsorption onto polymeric adsorbents is possible; (b) fouling can be reduced using newly produced composite polymers, (c) the adsorbents can be regenerated using steam or organic solvents.
