Long description: During the European workshop “Towards a Harmonized Management of European Soil Resources Research Agenda for Soil Protection” in Vienna (28th–29th October 2004) a group of scientists, under the guidance of the European Commission, DG Research, decided to analyse and evaluate the actual knowledge basis with regard to soil in order to determine future research needs, aimed at soil protection and the sustainable management of Europe's natural soil resources. The present booklet will outline the procedural advances and list the research targets that will help to define research needs on the national and European level based on importance, urgency and cost-effectiveness. This document is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Michel Robert who passed away on 28 October 2004.
