The need for research, resulting from the department task fo the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU), are specified each year in the Environmental Research Plan (UFOPLAN = Umweltforschungsplan). Contact point for questions and allocation of the projects is carried out by three agencies: Umweltbundesamt, Bundesamt für Naturschutz oder Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz, as well as in particular cases by the Ministry for the Environment.
