Short description: This book is for all professionals working with contaminated sites who need to have up-to-date key data at their fingertips. At the strategic level, the book is structured to help users formulate consistent and effective approaches to the management of contaminated land. At the implementation level, easy-to-use tables, checklists and flowcharts provide a wealth of practical information, such as when and where a technique can be applied, its strengths and limitations, procedures, health and safety, timescale and cost. The tables are supported by reference to key documents including official guidance. An on-site companion for practitioners in the field and a valuable reference resource for libraries, the Ready Reference will also be of value to surveyors, legal advisers and all those who need an accessible overview of the essential elements of robust strategies for the management of contaminated sites. The text has been subject to an extensive process of peer review. CONTENTS SITE ASSESSMENT Conceptual models The nature of conceptual models | worked examples | significant pollutant linkages Phase 1s Desk studies | walkover Sampling strategy Soil sampling strategy | groundwater sampling/monitoring strategies | gas sampling/monitoring strategies Methods of investigation Safety, health, environment | geophysics | intrusive investigation | field tests | groundwater investigation techniques | gas investigation techniques | soil and rock description | sample handling/preservation | laboratory analysis | outline costs | describing data Risk assessment The four stages of risk assessment | generic assessment criteria | site specific risk assessment tools for human health | risk assessment for groundwater | risk assessment for gas | risk assessment for ecology | risk assessment for buildings | risk assessment for property RISK MANAGEMENT Risk management Techniques, principles and approaches | risk management techniques – key principles and approaches – special circumstances Risk management techniques Civil engineering-based methods | primarily in situ methods | primarily ex situ methods | remediation to protect development from hazardous gases Risk management techniques: option appraisal and implementation Option appraisal and implementation in overview | option appraisal | implementation APPENDICES Useful information | statistical tables | websites
Long description: Update: Release 2, which is the first update to the Ready Reference, focuses on a major revision of the Risk Management section to reflect the significant developments since the book was first published. A substantial section has been added covering risk management techniques, principles and approaches. The treatment approach tables have been revised, and follow an outline of the 'operating window' concept. Signposting to sources of general information, handbooks and case studies, including web links, has been added for all techniques. There are new tables on in situ thermal and fracturing techniques, and on the use of energy forestry on contaminated land. The chapter on options appraisal and implementation has been rewritten and extended, in particular to take account of the Model Procedures. Within Risk Assessment, the section on ecological risks has been much expanded to reflect the significant developments in guidance in this sector. We have greatly benefited from the input of Jason Weeks, who was responsible for much of the Environment Agency's guidance on Ecorisk. While much has changed in human health risk assessment too, we will await the changes that will result from the DEFRA Way Forward consultation before updating these tables. In the meantime, the LQM CIEH Generic Assessment Criteria publication (available from www.lqm.co.uk) may be of interest.
