Glossary entry:Bulgaria
Meaning in EUGRIS: The Republic of Bulgaria is a parliamentary democracy with 28 provinces. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878 but, having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a People's Republic in 1946. Bulgaria covers an area of 110,910 square kilometres and has a population of 7.5 million. The capital is Sofia. Bulgaria candidates to become a member of the European Union in 2007.
