Glossary Entry
Germany is a Federal Republic with 16 states (Länder), founded in 1949. Located in the centre of Europe 
it is flanked by nine neighbouring states since the unification of the two German states in 1990. Germany
covers an area of 357,000 square kilometres. The longest distance from north to south as the crow flies
is 876 km, and from west to east, 640 km. With 83 million inhabitants Germany is one of the most densely-populated
countries in Europe. Capital is Berlin.

The following statistics and numbers are available for Germany in total and on the basis of the Federal States:

 

  • Inventory of suspected contaminated sites in Germany (Table 1)

 

  • Status of investigation and risk assessment for abandoned contaminated sites in Germany (Table 2)

 

  • Status of remediation and clean up in Germany (Table 3)

 

The Federal states are responsible to register the sites in their territories, but they are using to some extent a different systematic of registration (e.g. one registers one big size site, another registers several small size sites). For that reason, the numbers for Germany in total will remain in parts inconsistent.
