Wider impacts / sustainability France
The economic, social and environmental effects of contaminated
land problems and their management, from the perspective
of achieving sustainable development.
The French approach for contaminated land management is
based on a policy of risk management according to use. New
regulations went into effect in early 2007 to incorporate
feedback from over 10 years of experience with methodological
tools for contaminated land management. They emphasize
sustainable development as described in existing regulations
such as the need to keep records of pollution, cost-benefits
analysis, monitoring and site remediation using the best
available techniques, and usage restrictions. They tend
towards the implementation of a policy based on a site's
life cycle and confirm sustainability as the primary objective
of contaminated land management.
